What Does a Project Engineer Do?

Today we want to share with you a few things about the role a Project Engineer plays on oil & gas EPC projects.

The list below was posted on 22 January 2014 as part of a vacancy announcement on alloilgasjobs(.)com for a Project Engineer role at a company in Alberta, Canada.

  1. Responsible for arranging and carrying design reviews, model reviews, HAZOPs and Project risk assessments in coordination with project stakeholders
  2. Provide technical and project engineering support to one or more project managers
  3. Participate in review of Site Layout, PFDs, P&IDs, GA’s, specifications, calculations, and other engineering drawing/documents, especially those relating to the Project Engineer’s discipline
  4. Carry out and arrange timely review of engineering deliverables and procedures
  5. Assist in developing project execution-related documents like project charter, authorization for expenditure, communication plan, scope statement, procurement plan, risk register, project execution plan, etc.
  6. Initiate and facilitate development and review of project proposals, schedule, cost estimate, etc. in coordination with stakeholders
  7. Act as project manager during periods when project managers are away and as required
  8. Arrange and attend project progress review meetings and record minutes of meetings and action items
  9. Define the scope of work to be provided to potential consultants/ contractors in Request for Proposals in coordination with stakeholders
  10. Coordinate with the contractors coming on Horizon site to ensure compliance to CNRL safety requirements
  11. Respond to contractor’s concerns/questions on technical queries, and procedure
  12. Coordinate with Project Managers to review the progress and cost of projects and justification for variances on an ongoing basis
  13. Coordinate, collect and provide details of running projects for the weekly and monthly project status reports.
